—————-
Today the Israeli occupation forces have arrested two Gazan fishermen (saddam Saleh Abu Warda, 20, and Mahmoud Saleh Abu Warda, 19), both are still under arrest somewhere in Israel. The fishermen were at 3 nautical miles from the coast of Sudania – north of Gaza City- just where the fishing is more abundant. Yesterday the Israeli navy opened fire against several vessels destroying the fishing nets of 3.
Most of the media say that the fishing limit imposed by Israel is 6 nautical miles from the coast, however, this is not entirely true. As the map shows, the limit depends on the area. In the south of the Strip the limit is 6 miles, in the center is 5, and in the north fishermen can only reach 2 miles. The north is precisely where they can find the greatest amount of fishing. There are also two areas of total restriction: the extreme north and extreme south of the Strip.
The fishing fleet of the Gaza Strip includes 4,170 fishermen, about 2,000 are active and between 900 and 1000 go fishing daily. Those who can enjoy fishing overcome the difficulties of the fuel crisis that is devastating the Strip. They get fuel through the black market, something not very worthwhile for them but it’s better than nothing.
